Nic’s Story
Hi, I’m Ceri and I live in Manchester with my wife Nic and our two beautiful children Mae, who is ten and Finn who is six.
In May 2011 we were dealt a devastating blow when Nic was diagnosed with a brain stem tumour. Her tumour is a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, which is incredibly rare, and almost unheard of in adults. Unfortunately, it is not possible to operate or even take a biopsy from the brain stem area, so chemotherapy is not an option. Nic has had the only treatment available in the UK for this type of tumour, which was six weeks of radiotherapy. This has stabilised the tumour for now but it is only temporary. There is now nothing more that can be done in the UK to help her.
Nic is our world and the thought of losing her and for Mae and Finn to grow up without their Mummy is not something we can comprehend. She is a beautiful person, a fantastic mum, partner, sister, aunty and daughter and we want to do everything in our power to help her beat this dreadful disease.
There is a clinic in Houston, Texas where there is some treatment available to Nic. It is extremely expensive with an ongoing cost of around £90,000 per year. This pays for bags of medication which are administered intravenously, for blood tests every three days and brain scans every four to six weeks to monitor the tumour. The treatment is now Nics only chance of survival and our only chance to give her the chance to bring up Mae and Finn in the lovingly devoted way she has done so far.
Other people in a similar position to Nic have benefitted from this treatment, and we would like to ask you to support us in sending Nic to Texas for this potentially life saving treatment. We really need every bit of help we can get.
We now also have a Virgin Giving page set up. http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/nicsroadtorecovery
